Games have come a long way … as has our understanding of how games affect us.

Just like rock music in the 1950s, Dungeons & Dragons in the 1980s, and death metal in the 1990s, videogaming has been demonised by parent groups. For decades, gamers were portrayed as obese social outcasts that spent hours in a dark basement hunched over a flashing screen, slowly becoming more aggressive and distanced from reality.

Today, that stereotype couldn’t be further from the truth. The average gamer is as likely to be a university professor or a corporate banker as they are to be a high school or college student.

Furthermore, a growing body of research is showing a whole host of health benefits associated with gaming. The most recent piece of research shows an improvement in vision in those who suffer from congenital cataract disorders.

But it wasn’t always this way. Early studies were quick to demonstrate the negative consequences of gaming, linking time spent in front of a console or PC with:

In fact, videogame-related literature in the mid-2000s paints a bleak, violent and anti-social picture of gamers. With the help of the media, videogames quickly became the scapegoat for everything that was going wrong with kids.

But the vast majority of early studies only showed associations between gaming and adolescent decline, providing no evidence that videogames were the actual cause.

More recently, studies have shown no difference in aggression or depression levels between gamers and non-gamers. Similarly, researchers have shown that violent games increased frustration in players because of their difficulty rather than aggression because of their violence.

Moreover, when researchers tested young gamers before and after they entered their teens, the strongest predictors of increased aggression were increased exposure to family violence and peer influences.

ARCServe Mailbox Skipped During Backup Error AW9621

If you are using CA ARCserve for your backups in your corporate environment for Exchange Server backups whether this will be on a document level, i.e. individual mailboxes or a brick level, which generally covers just the entire Exchange database.

You probably have come across or will come at some point to seeing a failed backup job in ARCserve backup stating the following;

AW9621 Failed to back up 1 mailboxes.

This can be quite annoying as it does not give you much to go by, what mailbox failed and when and how, doing a google.com search on this error will eventually land you at CA’s official documentation stating what the error code is and then states to consult the Exchange logs generated by the Agent on the Exchange server.

After some searching and digging I eventually found the location of the logs where this might be of some use, the logs are situated on the Exchange server at this location, %Program Files%\CA\ARCServe Backup Agent for Microsoft Exchange Server\LOG

Once you’re in that location, you’ll find a skipreport.log file, the filename can vary, but should contain something with ‘Skipreport” in its’ filename, this in my case indicated which mailbox was skipped and at what time, doesn’t state why though unfortunately but should give you some more details to go by.

Whitney Houston’s Death

I first must say there is nothing funny about the passing of anyone. But with the recent news of the death of Whitney Houston, messages began to circulate over the internet ranging from people’s Facebook status or to twitter updates (which even began 45 minutes before the media coverage)

But nothing comes close to even showing as sheer ignorance or just plain racist of the fact Whitney Houston, as to some was just a darker skin woman, not sure what I mean?

Look at the two examples below of how idiotic some people are out there, who seems like can’t even tell where there left foot ends and, well… their right arm starts for that matter.

I rest my case!

Access To Sysinternals

Ever needed to find out just what the *blip* your computer is doing, when you are trying to run an application or excute something and you don’t know what process your computer is trying to execute?

If you’ve heard of Process Explorer, then you’ll definitely know you need to run the application install and fire it up, right?

Well not anymore you don’t, what if you have a PC that you just need to quickly check the processes running in more detail? What if you cannot install software on this PC, but you have internet access? Then you can access a live repository of the Sysinternals tools. That’s right!

Simply type in the address bar, or in a run dialogue box, \\live.sysinternals.com\tools and you can access all Microsoft tools as part of the sysinternals which includes Process Explorer. How cool is that?

More detail about the live Sysinternals repository here: Official Website

DJJ Howard: Extra J is for John

I had recently come across what I believe to be the most interesting thing that has ever happened in John Howards’ political career, well OK, that’s unfair, he has done us a tremendous effort at times and if I still had my choice he would be the front man for a Liberal party, but anyway, in his lifetime he has accomplished being quite the DJ.

Well I will let you be the judge of just how well DJ Howard can… well DJ.

Well what do you think? I personally find it very creative and the best side to John Howard yet!
